Tsawwassen

Tsawwassen is a residential community located within the southwestern corner of the Corporation of Delta, BC. The suburban city is situated on a peninsula and through 56th Street, offers the only road access to the community of Point Roberts within Washington, USA.

Tsawwassen is also home to one of the BC Ferries Terminals. Built in the year 1959, the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal provides motor vehicle and foot-passenger entry to the southern part of Vancouver Island and the Southern Gulf Islands. As the city of Tsawwassen touches such a shallow bank, the ferry terminal was constructed at the southwestern end of a 3 km long causeway which juts out into the Strait of Georgia. This is the biggest ferry terminal within North America. The ferry dock and causeway are part of Highway 17.

From the Tsawwassen ferry terminal, the ferries transport passengers to Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands by crossing the Strait of Georgia. It is possible to drive your vehicle below deck or walk onto the ferry. Journeying to the island is exciting because you get to travel through fantastic islands and sail over clear water. On a sunny day it is fun to explore the outer decks and you may be able to see killer whales, seals or bald eagles.

Several other landmarks consist of the Boundary Bay Airport, situated 10 minutes away. This is amongst the busiest general aviation airports within Canada. The Vancouver International Airport is likewise near-by in Richmond and the Roberts Bank Superport is situated close to the city of Tsawwassen.

The Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal is situated just of Highway 17, in the vicinity of the USA and Canada border, 35 km or 22 miles south of Vancouver and 22 miles or 35 km west of White Rock.

The traditional home of the Tsawwassen First Nation people is the Lower Mainland area. Present day, they have a 700 acre reserve which is situated in the vicinity of the Ferry Terminal. The Tsawwassen People are amongst the 54 Coast Salish nations who initially occupied this area for over 10,000 years.

Boundary Bay is a community located within the southeast corner of the peninsula. It was founded in the 1890's and commonly goes by the name Boundary Bay. A seaside summer community has emerged here for better-off inhabitants of Vancouver. Some of the first cottages are still standing today. Many of the original cottages have been updated and renovated as waterfront architectural homes and modern contemporary single family abodes.

Located further south, "The Bay" as it is called by residents borders on the edge of Maple Bay in Point Roberts, Washington, USA. At the foot of 67th Street, there used to be a Canada and USA customs checkpoint which joined the two communities. In the 1970s, this checkpoint was closed. Presently, Boundary Bay Road provides the only current access route.

The largest shopping centre within South Delta is the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall. Some other popular merchants comprise Tim Hortons, McDonalds, Dairy Queen, White Spot, Jsu design, Cold Stone Creamery, Safeway, JohnMichael, two Starbucks, Thrifty Foods, and an Indian Restaurant referred to as Connaught Place Restaurant, amongst many others.
