False Creek is an inlet located within the center of Vancouver City, BC. The creek separates the downtown core from the Lower Mainland and the rest of the city. The creek got its name from George Henry Richards who was performing Hydrographic survey of the area during 1856 to 1863. There are some bridges which span False Creek such as Cambie Street and Granville Street Bridges and the Burrard Street Bridge. The Burrard Street Bridge crosses the western end and Science World is found at the eastern end.
False Creek is amongst the 4 major bodies of water that border the city of Vancouver together with the Burrard Inlet, the Fraser River and the English Bay. It has become an extremely popular boating place utilized for a variety of different activities including public ferries, canoeing, kayaking, dragon boating, visiting pleasure boats and charter ships. False Creek has 10 different marinas with berths in order to accommodate 1500 watercraft and some paddling clubs and boat rental facilities. The Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival and several other paddling events have been situated at this particular place ever since the year 1986.
During the 2010 Paralympics and Olympic Winter Games, Southeast False Creek was the place of the Vancouver Olympic Village. This spot was built on the last remaining large tract of waterfront land which was undeveloped near downtown Vancouver.
Ever since the 2010 Winter Games, Southeast False Creek has become a home for up to 16,000 inhabitants. The area has big 45,000 square foot community centre. The future developments include an elementary school, a public plaza, a community garden and various child care centres amongst other things.
