The residential district of Marpole within the city of Vancouver, BC is situated on the city's southern edge. There are approximately 22,400 inhabitants in Marpole which are located immediately northeast of the Vancouver International Airport. It is bordered by Angus Drive towards the west, 57th Avenue to the north, Main Street to the east and the Fraser River towards the south. In the past century, Marpole has gone through numerous changes. There has been a huge increase in traffic with the construction and development connected with the Oak Street Bridge, leading to Hwy 99 and the southern suburbs as well as the Arthur Laing Bridge that leads to Vancouver International Airport.
Marpole is considered to be amongst the oldest communities within the city of Vancouver. There is settlement evidence dating back to 3500 B.C. that has been found in the vicinity. During the 1860's, the area was originally settled by non-locals. The region was initially known as Eburne Station and existed as a separate village. It was separated from the city by miles of forest.
In Marpole, the majority of the stores and shops can be found along the south end of Granville Street. There are small corner shops of Oak Street and 67th Avenue as well as on 57th Avenue and Cambie Street. There are many big box stores, drive-through fast food restaurants and different distributors and manufacturers located along Marine Drive which extends east of the Arthur Laing Bridge. Along the banks of the Fraser River there are other heavy-industry kinds of companies.
Located just west of the Arthur Laing Bridge is the Wild Coyote nightclub, below the on-ramp at Hudson Street. The Metro Theatre, a live community theatre place within the city of Vancouver and the Fraser Arms Hotel are other local venues. The Great Marpole Midden is located just west of the Fraser Arms.
Existing developments have been proposed, pertaining to commercial and retail rental condominiums and buildings surrounding Marine Drive Station on the Canada Line. This development would be referred to as the Marine Gateway.
