Cambie Street

Cambie Street is a really well-known road located in Vancouver City, British Columbia, Canada. It derived its name from Henry John Cambie. He was a chief surveyor of the CPR or Canadian Pacific Railway's western division. Not to be confused with Cambie Road which is a major street situated in nearby Richmond.

There are two separate parts of the road. The street runs on a northeast-southwest alignment north of False Creek, following the rotated road grid within the downtown core. Due to this particular fact, the street really runs perpendicular to the Cambie Street Bridge, and there is no seamless connection between them. In reality, Smithe Street carries northbound traffic away from the bridge and Nelson Street carries southbound traffic onto the bridge. Cambie Street's downtown portion is a two-way lane for its length and extends to Pacific Boulevard within Yaletown from the south to Water Street within Gastown in the north.

South of False Creek, the street becomes a major 6-lane arterial road that runs as a two-way south and north thoroughfare across the Vancouver street grid. The road has a 10 metre avenue with a lot of grass between King Edward Avenue West and Southwest Marine Drive and lots of well established trees.

The Cambie Street Bridge is a varying-depth-post tension-box girder bridge that is six lanes wide spanning False Creek. This bi-symmetric, precast bridge really opened during the year 1985 and is the third bridge at this place. It is the easternmost of False Creek's fixed crossings. The Burrard and Granville Bridges are located just a little more than a kilometer to the west and the new Canada Line SkyTrain tunnel is situated just to the west of the Cambie Bridge.
