Kerrisdale

The suburban neighborhood of Kerrisdale is situated within the city of Vancouver, B.C. The area features older bungalows amongst many newer homes and mid to low-rise condo apartment style buildings.

The district of Kerrisdale has a lot of ethnic individuals, with a mix of Caucasian and Asian Canadians. A shopping district exists along West 41st avenue, between Maple and Larch Streets. More shopping is situated between West Boulevard and 47th and 37th.

The northern region of Marpole is often thought of as part of Kerrisdale, and some even refer to the area as Kerrisdale-Marpole. The Southlands is the portion of Kerrisdale that is situated in the southwestern area because of its location in relation to the city. The Southlands area is known for the abundance of horse stables and its rural feel. It is situated on the North Arm of the Fraser River on the floodplain.

Kerrisdale was named during the year 1905 when British Columbia Electric Railway manager R.H. Sterling asked Mrs. William McKinnon to name the interurban stop at what is now West 41st Avenue and at the time was Wilson road. Mrs. McKinnon referred to it as "Kerry's Dale," named after her family home within Kerrydale, Gairloch, Scotland. Kerrydale translates to "little seat of the fairies." Within a short time, it was called Kerrisdale.

Before the year 1929; the area was part of the Municipality of Point Grey. After that time, the area amalgamated with the Municipality of South Vancouver and the City of Vancouver. Throughout this time, many of the avenues and streets around this junction were developed. Certain local landmarks including Ryerson Church, Point Grey Secondary School, the Allen Brown Estate and Shannon Mews were constructed in these formative years.
