Dunbar Street

Dunbar Street in Vancouver, British Columbia; is a major north-south road that intersects directly through Vancouver. The street starts in the south near the Point Grey Golf and Country Club and extends north to 51st Avenue from 16th Avenue.

The road extends south from the Dunbar Neighborhood, starting at 16th Avenue and intersects King Edward Avenue and on through 41st Avenue, passing mainly residential neighbourhoods. Dunbar Street passes by the Dunbar Loop of Translink as well. At 51st Avenue, the route ends and the Point Grey Golf and Country Club lays to the south. Amongst the major routes, this one is the westernmost.

During 1958, the Dunbar Community Center was established. It was brought about through a local improvement by-law initiative. In this plan, the area inhabitants agreed to directly fund original building costs. The Dunbar Community Center is a busy establishment which is situated on Memorial Park West which is a big greensward bounded by playfields, playgrounds, a group of 6 tennis courts and a lot of shade trees.

At first, the park was referred to as Dunbar Park. Following WWI, the name was changed to Memorial Park. Following the amalgamation of West Point Grey together with the South Vancouver Municipalities the "West" was added onto the name of the park as the City of Vancouver already had a park existing with the same name.

The community centre was constructed near the corner of Dunbar Street and West 33rd Avenue. This site is just a short distance from the bustling Dunbar shopping neighborhood. The Dunbar Community Centre is open to people of various ages and serves as a multi-cultural residential space. A diverse range of activities and recreational programs are existing here including seasonal special events and outdoor lawn bowling. Through a joint Park Board Initiative and Community Centre Association, the really active fitness centre of Dunbar was just expanded.
