Port Moody

Port Moody is a small city located in Metro Vancouver. This semi-circular city is located at the east end of the Burrard Inlet within British Columbia. The Tri-Cities consist of Port Moody, that is the smallest, bordered by Burnaby on the west and Coquitlam on the south and the east. The rugged Coast Mountains together with the villages of Belcarra and Anmore are found to the north and northwest. Port Moody was named after Richard Moody.

According to the latest 2006 Census has shown that Port Moody has 10,125 private houses with 27,512 people. Since the last Census in the year 2001, there was a 15% increase in population growth. There has been major residential construction which can account for a portion of this population boom. Within the area, there are 8,015 residential houses which are owned and 2,115 which are rented. Port Moody has the 4th highest municipal median family income coming in at $70,239. The biggest employers within Port Moody are School District 43 and Eagle Ridge Hospital.

Port Moody city has in place a Stream Stewardship Program to be able to help protect the more than 41 streams flowing through Port Moody to Burrard Inlet. This particular program helps to manage the urban streams, the stream vegetation and the watersheds by helping to support the growth of insect life and fish. The PMES is also called the Port Moody Ecological Society. They are a not-for-profit group who works with the city of Port Moody in order to support ecological awareness within the area. The Port Moody Ecological Society volunteers operate a trout and salmon hatchery; provide public awareness and community outreach programs, and operate a water quality lab.

The City Hall within Port Moody has proudly been pesticide free ever since 1988. Port Moody city has banned utilizing pesticides altogether. Port Moody offers seminars each year at its Inlet Theatre in order to teach people how to garden naturally.

The city has been given many provincial, national and international awards. During the year 2004, the city of Port Moody was honored with a prestigious award from the UN sponsored International Award for "Liveable Communities" in the category of "Planning for the Future." For cities of the same size category, the city of Port Moody respectively won 3rd place overall.

Port Moody was highlighted by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business in 2008 for being the most fiscally responsible among B.C's 28 biggest cities.
