The start of the city of Kamloops date back to the Secwepemc (Shuswap) nation of the Interior Salish language group, who were actually the first residents of the place. The word "Kamloops" is the anglicized translation of the Shuswap word, "Tk'emlups," which translates to "meeting of the waters."
